Mental Maths Workout- Starters and Plenaries

(2)
A series of Mental Maths PowerPoint Presentations which can ideally be used as starter activities or plenaries . They focus mainly on numerical calculation and provide a 'quick fire' activity to promote mental recall. Children use mini whiteboards to record answers and most presentations provide answers which children can mark immediately as they proceed through the tasks. A few of the presentations provide slides where the teacher records the answers below using an interactive white board pen. Tasks include: adding, subtracting, doubling, halving, multiplying by 10,100, finding simple fractions of numbers and some problem solving, There is no preparation required and the slides are easily edited to provide further practice. Would be delighted if you could leave feedback.

Maths Count On / Count Back Oral Activities / Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide Whiteboard Tasks

There are 6 PowerPoint presentations which provide active maths tasks. All 6 are ideal starters or plenaries and provide reinforcement and consolidation in an active and engaging manner. Both of the 'Counting On' and 'Counting Back' presentations encourage and support carousel oral counting within a maths group or class. They ensure that children practise oral counting on and back from different start numbers. Both presentations can be edited easily with different starting numbers, Both of the 'Tens and Units Adding and Subtracting' presentations provide quick fire whiteboard activities with answers so that children can immediately correct. Both of the 'Hundreds,Tens and Units Multiplying and Dividing' presentations provide quick fire whiteboard activities with answers so that children can immediately correct. All of the activities present an active approach to learning number facts. These rehearsal activities are designed for use with children to help them to memorise essential number facts and practise their number skills. I have found these activities invaluable as they allow incidental assessment and can be delivered to groups /a class with ease. The children are engaged and motivated and enjoy them as starters and plenaries. I have uploaded several jpg files so teachers can peruse the resources more comprehensively. I hope that your children enjoy these active tasks. I would be delighted if feedback was provided. Many thanks for free use clip art provided by http://www.clipartlord.com/

They focus mainly on numerical calculation within 100 and provide a 'quick fire' activity to promote mental recall. Children use mini whiteboards to record answers and each presentation provides answers which children can mark immediately as they proceed through the tasks. . Tasks include: adding, subtracting and fact families. There is an emphasis on presenting maths language in different forms like: add, count on, increase, plus, subtract, minus etc. There is no preparation required and the slides are easily edited to provide further practice.

Handling Data- Introducing Block Graphs, Pictograms and Tally Marks

There are 4 presentations in total and each of them provides a simple introduction to data handling for young learners. They present information in: block graph form tally chart form pictogram form They are ideal lesson starters as they are clear and concise. They encourage the learners to actively record answers on mini whiteboards. Answers to each slide question follows on to provide immediate correction as the learners show their whiteboard answers. This ensures whole class/group engagement in the task as well as providing immediate teacher assessment. It is easier to see who is managing the task well and those who are struggling to interpret the charts etc. The emphasis is on interpreting simple data. There is added challenge when children are asked to analyse and identify the most popular or least popular item as well as comparing two different items. These presentations offer the children some raw data that they have not had to collect themselves. This can be useful: the teacher knows that everyone has the same information without worrying about the accuracy of recording methods. So, the children can focus on analysis rather than collection at this stage. I have found this approach an ideal introduction and children are more confident when they are asked to interpret data more independently. I have uploaded several jpg files so teachers can peruse the resources more comprehensively. I hope that your children enjoy these active tasks. I would be delighted if feedback was provided.

Fractions Made Simple - A Sequence of Lessons - Halves and Quarters

I have provided a comprehensive sequence of lessons to introduce, reinforce and consolidate simple fractions - halves and quarters. There are 7 PowerPoints plus 4 word documents. This allows consolidation and reinforcement of the basic concepts of fractions. Each presentation is clear, colourful and informs and engages the learners. These presentations on fractions provide a step-by-step introduction through a visual and conceptual approach. Learners will learn the relationship between the part and the whole with shaded circles, rectangles as well as other fun shapes. They will gain a basic understanding of fractions as they proceed through the lesson sequences. Learners are introduced to different ways to divide shapes, determine which shapes are divided into fractions, and complete the fractions of simple drawings. There are opportunities to count in sequences with halves as well as finding halves and quarters of simple and more complex numbers. Most importantly the learners engage with the presentations in an active manner as they record answers on mini whiteboards. I have provided some activities as follow on tasks after the lessons. There are some online links provided on the slides. I have provided some jpg files so teachers can peruse the resources more comprehensively. I would be delighted if you would provide feedback.
